    What We Know

    • Catching Fire gets a release date. 8th August 2011

Seven months before The Hunger Games bursts into theaters, Lionsgate has already announced the release date for its sequel. Catching Fire, based on the second book in Suzanne Collins’ bestselling trilogy will debut on Nov. 22, 2013. “The magical thing about the Hunger Games trilogy is that the books have such a vastly broad appeal,” said Joe Drake, co-COO of Lionsgate, in a statement. “The stories truly offer something for everyone, and the period around the Thanksgiving weekend is such an opportunity for families and friends to make an event of going to the movies.”

    • Simon Beaufoy delivers first draft of Catching Fire script to Suzanne Collins. 5th March 2012

While the release of “The Hunger Games” is still more than two weeks away, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy is already hard at work on the follow-up. In fact, he tells Metro, he’s just turned in the first draft of his adaptation of “Catching Fire” to novelist and series creator Suzanne Collins. That’s got to make a guy a little nervous.

“I think she’s reading it possibly right now, the first draft. Could well be today,” he says of Collins, whose own background has been helpful in the scripting process. “Because Suzanne has been a film writer and a TV writer, funnily enough she’s already done a lot of adapting for me. They’ll cut my wage if you say that."

Beaufoy is no stranger to adaptation, with the Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire,” “127 Hours” and the upcoming “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” among his credits. But taking on an installment of the hugely successful “Hunger Games” series was still daunting. “With this one, I had to be a lot more faithful also because there’s a fan base who are more than usually keen that you get it absolutely right,” he says. “‘The Hunger Games’ fan base are passionate beyond anything I’ve ever come across, and I would fear for my life [if I get it wrong]. If I do too free an adaptation of that, I shall get firebombed. So I’m being very careful of that.”

Of course, not everything from a book can make it into a movie, so not every bit of “Catching Fire” will make to the screen, which Beaufoy freely admits. But he’s cagey when it comes to details. “[Collins] just knows her audience brilliantly, and she’ll say ‘That bit you just can’t cut out because they’ll all go crazy.’ And other bits she’ll go, ‘This is fine that you’ve changed this,” Beaufoy explains. “But she really knows her readers. And because she’s been in the film world, she understands about adapting, that things have to go and things have to change.”

    • Jennifer Lawrence: Catching Fire and X-Men scheduling conflicts resolved. 6th April 2012

Tensions between the studios were running high last month as Fox was considering filming Lawrence's "X-Men" follow-up in the fall, potentially conflicting with Lionsgate's plans for a "Hunger Games" sequel.

There appears to be a resolution to the question of whether 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate will fight over the services of in-demand actress Jennifer Lawrence.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Fox is informing talent agencies Thursday that the studio plans to begin shooting its in-development sequel to X-Men: First Class in January. That means Lionsgate could move forward with an August-September start date for the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire without a conflict for Lawrence, who is set to star in both.

As THR previously reported, tensions between the studios were running high last month as Fox was considering filming the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men follow-up in the fall, potentially conflicting with Lionsgate's plans for Hunger Games. Fox, which cast Lawrence as the shape-shifting character Mystique in Summer 2010, months before Lionsgate chose her to play Katniss Everdeen in March 2011, has the right to exercise the option on her contract if it conflicts with another Hunger. That's true even though Lawrence is part of a large ensemble in X-Men but is the clear star of the Hunger franchise.

Fox's acquiescence isn't a total win for Liosngate. One source says the Hunger Games studio would have liked to "hold" all the actors for seven months in connection with shooting Catching Fire. But that lengthy demand (typical holds are months shorter) is said to have been dropped amid complaints by interested parties, including Fox.

Next up for Lionsgate is settling on who will actually direct the Hunger Games follow-up. As THR reported on Wednesday, Gary Ross, who co-wrote and directed the first film, does not have a deal for the second. The heated negotiation leaves open the possibility that another filmmaker could be hired to shepherd the next installment in the franchise, as happened on the mega-grossing Twilight. But sources close to the dealmaking expect Ross to stay with the franchise he helped launch.

    • Gary Ross: Will not be returning to direct Catching Fire. 10th April 2012

Lionsgate just released this statement from Gary Ross:
Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire. As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.

I loved making The Hunger Games – it was the happiest experience of my professional life. Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: they empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision.

I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends.

To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.

    • Lionsgate director search reportedly down to two directors. 18th April 2012

And then there were (probably) two. Multiple reports have surfaced on the web today that filmmakers Francis Lawrence and Bennett Miller are the final two contenders for the director of The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. (The Los Angeles Times appears to have first broke the story.)

The choice for the replacement of Hunger Games‘ Gary Ross — who bowed out of the Catching Fire gig last week, citing the tight production schedule — are pretty stark. Lawrence has extensive experience with visual effects-driven action sequences from his first two films, 2005′s supernatural thriller Constantine and 2007′s post-apocalyptic thriller I Am Legend — which shares a similarly bleak tone to Catching Fire. But his latest effort, the 2011 period drama Water for Elephants, fizzled at the box office, and landed mixed reviews for its handling of the star-crossed romance between Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. Many complained that the weakest part of Hunger Games was the romance between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence, no relation), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), and the romantic angle is far more front-and-center for Catching Fire.

Miller, by contrast, has practically no first-hand experience with CG-effects-heavy action scenes, and Catching Fire features more exotic locations that would likely call for extensive green-screen and effects work. Miller does, however, have an Academy Award nomination to his name for his debut feature, the 2005 biopic Capote, and last year’s Moneyball won Miller wide acclaim. He could bring an actor-friendly pedigree to the franchise, and it would certainly be a high-profile boost to his career trajectory. But Miller has another film, the true-life drama Foxcatcher, that’s aiming to start production this fall, with Steve Carell and Channing Tatum attached and Mark Ruffalo in talks to join. That project would almost certainly need to be put on hold; it seems unlikely that Lionsgate would be willing to delay production on Catching Fire until after Jennifer Lawrence finished shooting the X-Men: First Class sequel next spring, especially since they didn’t do it for Ross.

Lionsgate reportedly may have their decision made by the end of this week. A rep for the studio declined to comment when reached by EW.

    • Francis Lawrence Is Lionsgate's Choice to Direct 'Catching Fire'. 19th April 2012

After a quick but fairly exhaustive search, Lionsgate has chosen Francis Lawrence to direct the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire.

Sources say that Lawrence will receive an official offer this afternoon. If he accepts and a deal can be worked out, he will replace Gary Ross, who directed the first installment of the hugely successful franchise.

The hunt had been a fast and furious one, with the field narrowing down to Lawrence, the director of I Am Legend and Water for Elephants, and Bennett Miller, the director of the acclaimed Brad Pitt baseball movie Moneyball. Both directors met with the studio today, according to sources, and Lionsgate executives have made their pick.

Lawrence was deemed the front-runner by observers simply because of his open schedule. Miller is working his way to a December start for Foxcatcher, a true-life project centering John Du Pont that has been his focus for several years. Miller has even lined up Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffallo for the drama and pushing it would have been a Herculean task.

Other directors on the list of Catching Fire contenders were Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy), Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu (Babel), Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre) and Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code).

One question that Lawrence’s hiring raises is that of the shape of the screenplay. Ross, who is a writer as much as he is a director, worked on the Hunger Games script and was planning on spending two months honing Fire, working on a script previously penned by Simon Beaufoy. The producers and new director can keep working with Beaufoy or hire new scribes to hammer out words.

The moviemakes are facing a ticking clock scenario, especially since they set a November 22, 2013 release date. Also coming into play is that shooing for Fire needs to be done by late December so that star Jennifer Lawrence, who is not related to the Austrian-born director, can have time to shoot the sequel to X-Men: First Class. Fox, which is making that movie, has an option on the actress which takes precedence over her Lionsgate commitment.

    • OFFICIAL: Francis Lawrence to direct CATCHING FIRE 3rd May 2012

SANTA MONICA, CA (May 3, 2012) - LIONSGATE® (NYSE: LGF), a leading global entertainment company, announced today that Francis Lawrence has officially signed on to direct CATCHING FIRE, the sequel to THE HUNGER GAMES, based on the second in a series of books by Suzanne Collins that has 36 million copies in circulation in the US alone. The announcement was made by Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group Co-Chairmen Patrick Wachsberger and Rob Friedman.

Lawrence, who is represented by CAA and 3 Arts Entertainment, has experience directing films that make him uniquely suited to handle the blend of character driven drama and high stakes action of CATCHING FIRE; among them are I AM LEGEND, CONSTANTINE, and WATER FOR ELEPHANTS.

"Lionsgate, the cast, and filmmakers are all thrilled to have Francis Lawrence come on board as director of Catching Fire. Suzanne's brilliant book is the intense story of the birth of the rebellion and Katniss' emotionally charged journey as she takes on the mantle of the Mockingjay, and we all think Francis is the perfect director to bring the story to life,” said Erik Feig, Lionsgate’s President Of Production.

“From the very beginning of this brilliant trilogy's journey from page to screen, our first priority has been to stay true to the heart and soul of Suzanne Collins' powerful stories. From my first conversation with Francis, I knew he would make a great partner for both me and Suzanne. His passion for Catching Fire and inspired ideas for a faithful adaptation make him the perfect director for this movie. I know this will be a wonderful collaboration and I cannot wait to get started,” echoed producer Nina Jacobson.

Said Francis, "It is truly an honor and a privilege to bring Catching Fire, the second chapter of Suzanne’s beloved trilogy, to the big screen. I fell in love with the characters, the themes and the world she created and this chapter opens all of these elements up in such a thrilling, emotional and surprising way. I can’t wait to dive right into it and bring this chapter to life along with the truly superb cast and filmmakers involved."

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth will reprise their roles as Katniss, Peeta and Gale, with Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, and Woody Harrelson also returning to their respective roles. The film will be produced by Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Production is slated to begin this Fall, and the film will be released on November 22, 2013.

THE HUNGER GAMES has broken many box office records since it opened on March 23, 2012. It achieved the highest grossing opening weekend ever for any non-sequel film and the third biggest opening weekend in box office history. It has already grossed $373 million at the North American box office, ranking in the top 20 films of all time, and it recently crossed the $600 million mark in worldwide box office.

    • Michael Arndt in Talks to Re-Write 'Catching Fire' 4th May 2012

Catching Fire is catching a new writer.

Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar for his Little Miss Sunshine screenplay and penned Toy Story 3, is in talks with Lionsgate to work on the high-profile sequel to The Hunger Games, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Francis Lawrence is officially on board to direct the movie, stepping into the chair vacated by Gary Ross, who helmed the $600 million-grossing first installment in the franchise.

The sequel is barreling toward a late-summer production start. While Lionsgate doesn't yet have a deal with Arndt, if he signs on, he will have to work double-time to get the script ready due to a squeezed schedule caused by star Jennifer Lawrence’s commitment to Fox’s X-Men: First Class sequel. That tight schedule was one reason Ross declined to take on the project.

Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) wrote the initial drafts of the script, based on the best-selling Suzanne Collins novel.

Arndt, repped by Verve, also worked on Order of the Seven, Disney’s upcoming internationally themed action movie.

    • Role of Plutarch Heavensbee allegedly offered to Philip Seymour Hoffman 12th June 2012

'The Hunger Games' bosses have allegedly locked on to Philip Seymour Hoffman for sequel 'Catching Fire'.

The adaptation of the second novel in Suzanne Collins' phenomenally successful series of teen novels could preportedly see the star playing Plutarch Heavensbee.

Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson are all expected to reprise their roles as Katniss Everdeen, Gale and Peeta respectively, whilst rumours surrounding Robert Pattinson joining the cast have been brushed off.

Heavensbee is the new gamemaker, recruited following the dismissal of Seneca Crane who steps into Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley).

Armie Hammer and Garrett Hedlund have also been linked to the movie for the role of Finnick Odair.

The first film in the franchise broke records when it was released in March, and in the UK it beat the box office gross of the first 'Twilight' film.

'Catching Fire' will begin shooting in Atlanta shortly.

    • Jenna Malone in talks to play Johanna 4th July 2012

It's official! Jena Malone has been revealed as the actress portraying Johanna Mason in 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'

'Catching Fire', the massively anticipated sequel to the wildly successful 'Hunger Games' film, has secured some more awesome talent.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jena Malone, who starred in 'Sucker Punch' with Emily Browning, is set to take on the role of tough girl Johanna Mason.

And, being as she first appears in the novel completely naked in an elevator, we doubt anyone less gutsy than Malone could've done this Tribute justice!

Jena Malone will join Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth on the set of 'Catching Fire' - the second book in the successful Suzanne Collins trilogy - although whether she will join Katniss and Peeta in their fight against the Capitol is a completely different matter!

    • Philip Seymour Hoffman Signs On For Catching Fire 9th July 2012

The odds are definitely in Philip Seymour Hoffman's favor!

Sources tell E! News exclusively that the Oscar winner has signed on to play Plutarch Heavensbee in Catching Fire, the much anticipated second movie in the Hunger Games trilogy.

"The deal was made right before the Fourth of July holiday," one source said.

Lionsgate does not comment on casting until something is official. An announcement about Hoffman is expected to be released any day now.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Hoffman, 44, was offered the role on June 11.

Heavensbee is the new Head Gamemaker who may (or may not) be more loyal to reigning champ Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) than the diabolical President Snow (Donald Sutherland).

Catching Fire is set to start shooting in the fall with director Francis Lawrence replacing Gary Ross.

Hoffman was most recently seen on Broadway with The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield in the hit revival of Arthur Miller's Death of Salesman.
