    Most shocking death (spoilers)

I'm not going to lie, I was a complete wreck by the time I finished Mockingjay. I don't think I've had this strong a reaction to reading a book since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

For me, there were 2 shocking deaths in Mockingjay. They took me completely by surprise and it took rereading for me to convince myself that they actually died. I am talking about Finnick and Prim. We got to know so much about Finnick, and he became one of my favorite characters. I didn't see his death coming, and when it did I didn't believe it. I honestly don't know how I managed to keep reading after that, but these books are hard to put down once the action starts.

I knew Prim's death was coming (it was one of the main reasons I never wanted to read THG), but actually reading it and reading Katniss' reaction afterward was tough. I think what was shocking about it was who was potentially responsible for her death. Suzanne Collins placed Prim's death at a good place in the novel because if it happened any sooner, I don't think I would have finished the book.

So what is everyone's opinion on the most shocking or even saddest deaths in Mockingjay?

I think i was more saddened by Finnick's death than Prim's. I feel we got to know Finnick better. He was so strong but then so damaged by the capitol. Finnick's death caught me off guard, just happily married and expecting a baby, and he had to do and die

I think i was expecting Prim's death. It was a given. After everything Katniss had done to care for Prim, taking care of her when their mother couldn't, volunteering for her, you could just see it was the end game. Katniss couldn't take care of her forever. She just had to go and be a medic in the capitol during the war time. What was she thinking! Oh Prim...

Oh Prim, indeed. I think she grew up a lot in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. I knew her death was coming before reading The Hunger Games, but if I didn't I would have like to believe that Prim would have survived. Her sister volunteered and was the leader of a revolution, so it would have been nice if Prim got to reap the benefits of her sister's love and devotion. She was going to be a doctor,

Both deaths shocked me too. And like MAY said, I had to reread to make sure I read it correctly. Finnick's death came so quickly, like one moment he's there and the next he was dead. I wasn't ready for it at all. And when it came to Prim's death, the saddest thing to me was that despite everything Katniss tried to do to protect her sister, nothing was good enough. The story begins with Katniss making what she thought would be the ultimate sacrifice to protect her sister, when it turns out that it only delays her untimely death.

I've never been so depressed from a book, but after finishing mockingjay I felt I needed a hug ha. I sat in silence for about 20 minutes just trying to get a grasp on what had happened.
    Thank you for your consideration.

I agree with everyone about Finnick and Prim.

If I were to be honest though, I had to re-read both deaths because I was blazing through the last book and wasn't really paying attention. Especially Prim's last scene. I read it probably 3 times before I finally realized what happened.

So I just finished reading Mockingjay last night, and I totally agree. Finnick's was pretty bad it being such a painful death and poor Annie, but Prim's just killed me. I still can't stop being upset. I cried reading the part when Buttercup comes back and Katniss yeells at him then he finally realizes Prim is gone. So heartbreaking.

Finnick's, definitely. I also found his the most underwhelming. For a character we got to know so well, he got a shockingly lame death I think. Take Boggs for example, we didn't know him too much. Yet his death was long and drawn out before he passed. Finnick's was "Pop he got decapitated by a lizard, wah okay moving on." I felt as if he just got quickly disposed of. Which was disappointing, I wanted a big dramatic death for him! I knew he was going to die anyways, I expected something grand.

I figure this is exactly what the author wanted to show. It seems so clear her third book was her banging away at the Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park on the evils of war, and perhaps an atonement for criticism that she glorified kid-on-kid violence in the earlier books. In this scene, she wanted a beloved character that the reader was emotionally invested in to die an ignoble, rushed, and unexpected death, to show that that's what happens on the battlefield--young soldiers get married, go to war, and die suddenly and unexpectedly under fire, without being able to make one final heroic speech to their loved-ones, like they always get to do in the movies.

So, kudos to her, I guess, for getting her point across. However, I feel it, like all the other "war is hell" points she made, were heavy-handed, and their gravitas lost by the dis-believable plot.

    Just MNSHO of course
